What to do in Lapland?

When I first visited Lapland, it was truly an amazing experience. The snow covered landscapes created an almost otherworldly atmosphere. From husky sledding through the frozen forests to warming up in a cozy cabin by the fire. Every moment in Lapland was a blend of adventure and fun. The culture, the landscapes, and the quiet magic of the Arctic left me with memories I’ll cherish forever.

The northern lights

Watching the northern lights, the vibrant colors across the sky was absolutely surreal. It was one late night in Abisko I saw them shine in the sky as a faint green shimmer, before bursting into a vibrant display of greens and pink. Photos can’t capture the true beauty of the auroras, it was truly an amazing experience. Lapland’s northern lights are an experience that goes beyond words.

Travelers always flock to Lapland to see the beautiful northern lights. Because the region's dark, clear skies provide the PERFECT backdrop for this natural spectacle. Some of the best places to view the northern lights are "Abisko National Park" in Sweden, and "Rovaniemi" in Finland. The best times to view Auroras are between September, October, March & Early April.

The Icehotels

If you’re visiting Lapland, staying at the Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi is an absolute must. The entire hotel is rebuilt every winter, and every single room is a work of art. I’m not going to lie, it was a bit surreal walking into a building made entirely of ice. The walls, the furniture, the bed, it was all sculpted out of ice.

Sleeping on an ice bed (don’t worry, there are warm reindeer hides and thermal sleeping bags) was a little scary, but surprisingly comfortable. But it’s more the experience you get than the sleep that sticks with you. Waking up in the middle of the night in a room that glows faintly blue from the ice is something I’ll never forget. It’s like being in another dimension.

Husky Sledding

One of the highlights of my trip was the day I spent on a husky sled. Honestly, I had no idea what to expect. I love dogs, but I wasn’t sure if being pulled by them through the wilderness would be as fun as it sounded. It was so much better.

The hushies are full of energy, their enthusiasm is contagious! As soon as the dogs took off, the world became quiet except for the sound of their paws in the snow and the sled moving smoothly behind them. It was both exhilarating and peaceful at the same time. For me, the best part was feeling so connected to nature and the animals—it’s a peaceful yet exhilarating experience. After a few hours, we stopped at a small wooden hut in the middle of nowhere, where our guide lit a fire and made us coffee. Sitting by that fire, sipping warm coffee, I remember thinking, This is what real adventure feels like.

Whether you’re driving the sled or just enjoying the ride, husky sledding is a must-try if you love the outdoors and a bit of adventure.
